When Michael Bloomberg's next expansion of his financial news empire goes on television -- it's scheduled to make its debut on May 1 -- the size of its audience will be difficult to judge. Mr. Bloomberg said yesterday that his Bloomberg Financial Markets service would create a 13-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week television news service called Bloomberg Direct that will be transmitted on DirecTV, a satellite-to-home broadcasting service that will go on the air in April, offering home viewers an alternative to local cable systems.

Ohio Reporter Ends Jail Stay

Lisa A. Abraham, an Ohio newspaper reporter who was jailed for refusing to testify before a grand jury, was released yesterday. Ms. Abraham, 30, a reporter for The Tribune Chronicle of Warren, Ohio, served 22 days in jail. A special county prosecutor had tried to compel her to testify about an interview she conducted with a county official who has been indicted. Susan J. Svihlik, executive editor of The Tribune Chronicle, said the judge in the case ordered Ms. Abraham's release after the prosecutor acknowledged that the grand jury was unlikely to conduct a new inquiry this week. The grand jury's term expires on Monday.

COLUMBIA HEALTHCARE-HCA MERGER IS COMPLETED

Shareholders of the Columbia Healthcare Corporation and the HCA-Hospital Corporation of America yesterday approved a combination of the nation's two largest hospital chains, completing the stock-swap deal that created the largest for-profit health care services provider in the world. The approval, which was expected, comes two days after the Federal Trade Commission cleared the merger, the value of which has risen from $5.7 billion to $7.6 billion following the rise in Columbia's stock price since the deal was first announced in October.

AMOCO PLANS TO ELIMINATE 360 TO 600 JOBS

The Amoco Corporation of Chicago said yesterday that it would reorganize its fuels marketing business and cut 360 to 600 jobs to help the oil company maintain its share of the United States market. Amoco wants to cut 6 percent to 10 percent of the 6,000 employees at its Amoco Oil unit and slash costs 10 percent to 18 percent. Amoco Oil, the company's refining, marketing and transportation business, sells gasoline, diesel, jet and other fuels. The reorganization calls for Amoco Oil to align itself in four areas: brand marketing, sales operations, business development and commercial sales.

APPLE TO CUT PRICES ON MACINTOSH QUADRA LINE

Apple Computer Inc. said yesterday that it would cut the prices of its line of Macintosh Quadra personal computers by as much as 18 percent to spur sales of the machines just before the company introduces its next generation of personal computers. The company also said it would give mail-in cash rebates of $150 to customers in the United States who buy selected Quadra computers with certain Apple printers.

APPLE TO INTRODUCE SET-TOP DEVICE FOR INTERACTIVE TV

Apple Computer Inc. said yesterday that it would introduce a device next week for television sets that can order and receive so-called interactive TV services like movies on demand. Apple will demonstrate the system on Tuesday in Los Angeles, with a system by the Oracle Systems Corporation for storing and distributing movies over fiber optic lines. Oracle is developing software to control computers that will process orders for interactive services. Apple's set-top box and others being developed by the General Instrument Corporation and Scientific-Atlanta Inc. will turn those signals into television images.

S.A.S. PLANS LARGE WORK FORCE AND SPENDING CUTS

The Scandinavian Airlines System announced deep spending and work force cuts yesterday. Operating costs will be sliced 2.914 billion kronor, or about $360 million, by 1995 and 2,900 employees, about 15 percent of the work force, will be let go. The belt-tightening moves are the latest in a string of survival measures S.A.S. has taken since a proposed merger with three other airlines fell apart in November. To streamline its fleet, S.A.S. said it would stop using its 11 Boeing 737's. The company said it hoped to lease the 737's to its British Midland subsidiary and hoped to sell or lease the 13 Saab 340's in its commuter operation.

DIAL UNIT TO BUY ASSETS OF BRITISH AIRLINE CATERER

The Dial Corporation, based in Phoenix, said yesterday that its airline catering unit, Dobbs International Services Inc., had signed a preliminary agreement to acquire most of the assets of the British airline caterer Steels Aviation Services Ltd. The terms were not disclosed. Dobbs will acquire Steels's airline catering kitchens in Bristol, Newcastle and Gatwick, England, and Glasgow, Scotland. The flight kitchens serve about five million meals a year to several airlines. Steels, based in London, is a unit of Bricom Group Ltd.

COLGATE-PALMOLIVE TO BUY BACK UP TO 5 MILLION SHARES

The Colgate-Palmolive Company said yesterday that it would repurchase up to five million common shares, or about 3 percent of its outstanding shares. The consumer products company said purchases would be made occasionally in the open market or in private transactions. The New York-based company sells branded products including Colgate toothpaste, Palmolive dishwashing liquid, Ajax cleanser, Irish Spring soap and Hill's Science Diet dog food.

ITT's Sheraton Unit in Pact To Buy Ciga Hotels of Italy

The ITT Corporation's Sheraton Hotels unit signed an accord with five of Ciga Hotels SpA's largest creditor banks to buy the troubled Italian lodging group, Ciga announced today. ITT outbid the rival hoteliers Forte P.L.C. and the Host Marriott Corporation by offering 900 billion lire, or about $530 million, a person close to ITT said. In the course of negotiations Tuesday, ITT increased its bid from 840 billion lire, or about $465 million, the person said.
