Reporters Must Show Notes on Gotti Lawyer

A Federal appeals court ruled yesterday that 10 reporters and two television news organizations must give limited testimony about interviews they conducted with Bruce Cutler, the former chief lawyer for John Gotti, the convicted organized crime leader. In its ruling, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said the reporters could be required to testify and produce unpublished notes about statements made to them by Mr. Cutler, but not about other matters.

Free Speech on Campus? It's a Matter of Debate

On an April evening this year, three women stopped outside the student union building at Pennsylvania State University and began throwing thousands of copies of a conservative student-run newspaper into their car, plunging the campus into a debate over free speech and the limits of protest. School officials say two of the women, who were later identified as Penn State students, objected to a cartoon in The Lionhearted, a conservative newspaper, depicting a female columnist at The Daily Collegian, the campus paper, in a bikini. In the cartoon, she sits on a bed whose headboard reads, "Feminist at Work."

BANKWORCESTER STOCK JUMPS ON BUYOUT BID

The shares of the BankWorcester Corporation jumped 10.1 percent yesterday after the company agreed to be acquired by the Bank of Boston Corporation. BankWorcester's shares rose $2.875, to $31.375, in Nasdaq trading. Bank of Boston agreed to acquire BankWorcester late Tuesday for $247 million, or $34 a share, in cash. The purchase would give Bank of Boston about 20 percent of the deposits in the second-largest city in Massachusetts. After the acquisition, the nation's 23d-largest banking company will hold $1.9 billion in deposits and 41 branches in Worcester County.

SUNTRUST TO BUY FLORIDA BANK FOR $65 MILLION

Suntrust Banks Inc. signed a definitive agreement yesterday to buy the Regional Investment Corporation of Tallahassee, Fla., the parent of Andrew Jackson Savings Bank, for $65.1 million. Andrew Jackson has assets of $418.5 million, loans of $357.5 million and deposits of $305.3 million. The savings bank will be merged into Sunbanks Inc., a unit of the Atlanta-based Suntrust. Regional Investment retains the right to receive up to $2.9 million in dividends, contingent upon Andrew Jackson's 1993 earnings. Sunbanks has $20 billion in assets and more than 350 offices.

MITEL SHARES JUMP AFTER AGREEMENT ON PRODUCT

Shares of the Mitel Corporation closed up 12.7 percent yesterday after the company announced it would sell a wireless telecommunications product developed by the Spectralink Corporation of Boulder, Colo. On Tuesday, Mitel said it would offer the Spectralink product as an option on its public switching systems through its Mitel Telecommunications Systems unit. The value of the distribution agreement was not disclosed.

BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB OFFERS EARLY RETIREMENT

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Company said yesterday that it would offer early retirement to as many as 2,600 employees as a cost-cutting measure. The New York maker of drugs and consumer products said a restructuring charge taken in the fourth quarter of last year would cover the plan's cost. Employees older than 50 and with at least 10 years at the company would be eligible to retire with enhanced pension benefits, adding five years to their age and length of service for pension calculations. The company did not say how many employees it expected to accept the offer, which is available until Nov. 15, or how much it expected to save. The company's stock rose 37.5 cents a share, to $58.625, on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday.

Shares of the Air and Water Technologies Corporation surged for a second day after a large institutional shareholder said it might seek to influence or control the company's management and policies. Compagnie Generale des Eaux, a French investment firm that holds a 23 percent stake in Air and Water, said on Tuesday in a Federal filing that it might also choose to sell all or a portion of its stock.

MOBIL FINDS BUYERS FOR NATURAL GAS IN QATAR

The Mobil Corporation said yesterday that it had moved a step closer to developing two huge natural gas projects in Qatar by lining up Chinese and Korean buyers for the gas. Mobil is a minority partner in both projects, which involve portions of North field in the Persian Gulf, the largest undeveloped gas field in the world. The projects will cost $11 billion and seek 24 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. Mobil's share of the reserves, if developed, could raise the company's total by one billion barrels of oil equivalents, a measure of both oil and natural gas, which equals 20 percent of Mobil's total reserves.

A.T.& T. ASKS TO BE TREATED LIKE OTHER CARRIERS

The American Telephone and Telegraph Company asked yesterday to be treated like other long-distance carriers, requesting that the Federal Communications Commission lift regulations that A.T.&T. says gives a competitive edge to the MCI Communications Corporation, the Sprint Corporation and others. A.T.& T. asked the F.C.C. to lift its designation as a "dominant" carrier, which requires it to reveal marketing plans and detailed financial projections to the public and delays the introduction of new products by as much as two years.
