But because it reunited the reporters and photographers who covered the Vietnam War, the celebration was tempered by sobering thoughts of the war and commemorations of those who died in the crossfire. ''I think it influenced everybody here tonight,'' said Eddie Adams, the former Associated Press photographer who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his photograph of a South Vietnamese police chief shooting a Vietcong soldier in the head. Federal aviation officials have grounded cargo flights by the New Jersey-based helicopter company whose aircraft crashed into the Hudson River a month ago, killing a traffic reporter for WNBC radio. The company, acting on its own, had suspended passenger flights earlier this month. Its officials said at the time that it planned to ''continue to run a safe cargo operation.''

MANY infants who die in New York City are buried in unmarked graves in Potter's Field, the Coalition for the Homeless reported. A study by the group showed that of 6,527 children under the age of 1 who died from 1981 to 1984, almost half -3,070 - were buried in trenches in the field, on Hart Island.
