The roster of former Daily News advertisers grew longer yesterday, as Macy's confirmed that it had stopped buying advertising space and union officials said that Abraham & Straus had, too. The two department stores were among the newspaper's largest advertisers, bringing it at least $10 million in annual revenue, the unions contended, and the stores' decisions to cancel were a major blow.

Gov. Mario M. Cuomo again offered to intervene as a mediator in the strike at The Daily News, and was again rebuffed by the paper's management, he said yesterday. "The unions are eager, but we're waiting for management," Governor Cuomo said. "They say they will consider it at the appropriate time, but not having heard from management, I assume they don't consider it an appropriate time."

For Ruben Vazquez, the hardest thing about being on strike against The Daily News is hearing the playful squeals of his youngest granddaughter, Ivana. "I don't have money to buy presents for my granddaughters, and it makes me feel so sad that I don't look foward to Christmas," he said as the toddler tumbled into his lap in his Bronx apartment. "I see them and it breaks my heart to think that on Christmas I will come up short."

The New York Association of Black Journalists is giving its Lifetime Achievement award to CAROL JENKINS , a news anchor and reporter on WNBC-TV who has received recognition, including an Emmy, for excellent television reporting. She will receive the award on Dec. 7 at the organization's annual scholarship dinner. The association also gives college scholarships and cash awards to the winners of a high school essay contest.

THE audio tapes that Cable News Network has, supposedly showing that the Government recorded telephone conversations between Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega and members of his defense team, are said to be so scratchy that it is hard to make out much of the conversation. Maybe that was the reason for the puzzling journalistic decision of the Atlanta-based cable network to broadcast a report saying that it had the tapes before it played any of them.

The phone at home can ring at any time, but usually it's late at night. They want you to know that you're being followed. "Don't mess around with us," the caller says. Or you find in the mail a printed invitation to your own funeral. You feel frightened, helpless, paranoid. They've made their point: You'll think twice before writing against them again. When I go out, I feel followed. Everybody looks suspicious. I'm always careful about where and when I drive. Sometimes I think it's better if I didn't go outside at all. I feel like a hostage; they have turned my house, my car and office into a jail.

Expecting a loss for the year, the Ameritrust Corporation said it had halved the dividend on the banking company's common stock. Officials said they resorted to the cut -- the first in the company's 96-year history -- mainly because of problem loans linked to a lagging commercial real estate market. The Ameritrust board declared a quarterly dividend of 16 cents a common share, down from 32 a share in the third quarter. The dividend is payable on Dec. 10 to stockholders of record on Dec. 3. For the first nine months of 1990, Ameritrust reported a loss of $19 million.
