Amer Bar Assn pres Cleary S Cone says on July 13 that John D Ehrlichman's conviction on perjury and conspiracy charges will result in at least his temporary suspension from practice of law in Washington state; says assn's disciplinary bd could eventually recommend Ehrlichman's permanent disbarment to state high ct; under assn's procedures, Washington Sup Ct will issue order temporarily suspending Ehrlichman from practicing law once assn's disciplinary bd formally notifies it of conviction; next step would be for bd to order hearing by trial of several attys; com's recommendation would then be relayed to assn's disciplinary bd for further rev and possible amendment and finally passed to Washington Sup Ct (S)

John D Ehrlichman, Eugenio R Martinez, G Gordon Liddy and Bernard L Barker on July 12 are found guilty by jury of conspiring to violate rights of Daniel Ellsberg's former psychiatrist Dr Lewis J Fielding; Ehrlichman is also found guilty on 3 of 4 counts of making false statements; false statement charge of which Ehrlichman was acquitted concerns statement made to grand jury on May 14, '73, in which he said that he did not know who other than Egil Krogh Jr had files on plumbers' investigation of Ellsberg; 2 other grand jury charges of which Ehrlichman was found guilty involve his stating that he had not been aware before break-in of plan to obtain psychological profile of Ellsberg; Ehrlichman plans to appeal; White House press sec Ronald Ziegler tells reporters traveling with Pres Nixon to Calif that Nixon will have 'absolutely no comment' on Ehrlichman's conviction; adds that White House does not want to prejudice case because there will be appeals; Gesell schedules sentencing for July 31; Ehrlichman, speaking to newsmen, says that he is meeting with attys to rev matter; says he has been concerned about difficulty of obtaining fair trial 'in this district'; says for yrs he has had abiding faith in Amer judicial system and nothing that has happened has shaken his faith; says he looks for complete exoneration'; Daniel Shultz, atty for Martinez and Barker, expresses disappointment over verdict; illus of Ehrlichman and wife, Barker, Martinez and Shultz (L)

J Reston comment on conviction of John D Ehrlichman for conspiracy and perjury in case of Ellsberg break-in; holds that decision is regarded as significant because it rests in part on principle that official is responsible for acts of his subordinates if he approved covert plans that led to illegal acts, even if he did not approve specific burglary under that plan; holds decision sustained Judge Gerhard Gesell's principle that even good motives do not justify illegal acts; holds that these points bear directly on what govt official may or may not do and, if sustained, are likely to make White House aides much more cautious in future about authorizing dubious practices regardless of their motives; contends they bear indirectly on continuing impeachment inquiry of Pres Nixon; holds that distinction has to be made between Ehrlichman case and Nixon case, in that Ehrlichman approved in writing 'covert operation' to examine Fielding's files, while there is no such evidence that Nixon did same
